48 hours in Kota Kinabalu

Night markets, Gaya Street breakfasts and the waterfront sunset spot locals actually go to.

Orange sunset over the sea at Kota Kinabalu waterfront

Kota Kinabalu, or "KK", is the gateway to Sabah, and it's worth more than a quick overnight. Here's how we'd spend two days.

Day 1: islands and sunset

Take a 15-minute speedboat to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park for snorkelling and a beach lunch. Back in town, walk the waterfront at golden hour; the sunsets over the South China Sea are some of the best in Malaysia.

For dinner, head to the night market by the waterfront for grilled fish, satay and fresh coconut.

Day 2: culture and coffee

Start with breakfast on Gaya Street (Sunday market if you're lucky), then spend the afternoon at Mari Mari Cultural Village learning about Sabah's indigenous communities.

Where to stay

Stay near the waterfront to walk everywhere. We can recommend hotels to suit every budget.

Book both days with our Island Hopping & Snorkel and Kota Kinabalu City & Culture tours.
