The best months to see orangutans in Sabah

Fruiting seasons, river levels and feeding times: how to time your trip for the best chance of a wild encounter.

Sabah is one of the best places on Earth to see orangutans, both at rehabilitation centres and truly wild in the forest. Your chances depend on where you go and when.

Sepilok: year-round sightings

At Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, near Sandakan, semi-wild orangutans visit the feeding platforms most mornings and afternoons. Sightings are likely all year, but fewer orangutans come in when the forest is full of fruit.

Kinabatangan River: wild orangutans

On the Kinabatangan, you're looking for wild orangutans from a boat. Sightings are generally better in the drier months (roughly March to October), when river levels are lower and trees along the banks fruit.

Danum Valley: deep rainforest

In Danum Valley's primary rainforest, guides track wild orangutans on foot. It's less predictable, but the experience is unforgettable.

Tip: combine Sepilok with two nights on the Kinabatangan for the best of both: guaranteed close views and the thrill of a wild sighting.
