Staying in an Iban longhouse: etiquette and what to expect

A longhouse stay is a highlight of any Sarawak trip. Here's how to be a good guest.

Iban longhouses are home to whole communities living under one long roof. Staying overnight is a privilege, and a little preparation goes a long way.

Arriving

Your guide will introduce you to the headman (tuai rumah). It's polite to bring a small gift for the community, such as school supplies or snacks; your guide can help you choose.

Good manners

  • Take off your shoes before entering a family's room (bilik)
  • Ask before taking photos of people
  • Accept offered food or drink, even a small taste
  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees

Daily life

Expect jungle walks, cooking in bamboo over the fire, and stories in the long communal gallery (ruai) in the evening. Facilities are simple: mattresses, mosquito nets and shared bathrooms.

Our Batang Ai Iban Longhouse Stay is run with the community, and part of every booking goes directly to the longhouse.

Frequently asked questions
